Change Rick’s Fate in The Walking Dead: Destinies

New game rewrites the events of the TV series as Flux Games further explores the potential of transmedia entertainment

A new Walking Dead game is on its way. In the past, The Walking Dead games have either featured new characters or upheld the storyline of the comics or TV series. However, The Walking Dead: Destinies challenges what’s canon in the Walking Dead Universe by allowing players to alter the show’s narrative.

Flux Games, the creator of the games, Cobra Kai and Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising, is developing the game and it will be published by GameMill Entertainment.

“Change the course of The Walking Dead history,” states GameMill Entertainment in its description of the game. “Play as Rick Grimes, who wakes from a coma to find his world forever changed. Fight walkers, relive iconic moments from the hit television series, and change the destiny of The Walking Dead Universe as your choices separate heroes from villains and the living from the dead.”

The Walking Dead series ran for 11 seasons and was based on comics by Robert Kirkman. Wrapping up in November, the series spawned multiple spin-offs, including Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead Beyond and The Walking Dead: Dead City. For most of its seasons, the series centred on Sheriff Rick Grimes as he attempts to protect his family and friends from zombies and humans. But what if Rick didn’t survive his season two encounter with Shane?

Players can choose to save Shane

While the series ran for 11 seasons, the game only allows players to alter the narrative from the first four. However, as the trailer shows, players will be able to save Shane and kill Rick, creating an alternative narrative in which Shane becomes the group’s de facto leader.

Players can control Rick Grimes, his wife Lori, their son Carl, and Shane, Rick’s police partner and Lori’s affair partner. Other characters from the first four seasons slated to appear include Merle Dixon, Darryl Dixon, T-Dog, Glenn, Carol and Michonne. The antagonist from seasons three and four, The Governor, will also be part of the game.

While not yet mentioned, it seems likely that Andrea, who dies at the hands of the governor and is Michonne’s first connection to the group of survivors, will also appear in The Walking Dead: Destinies. Hopefully, the game will also allow players to save her from her grizzly season three death.

Each character in the game has a ranged and melee weapon. For instance, Daryl wields his iconic crossbow and a knife, while Glenn uses a pistol and crowbar. The Walking Dead: Destinies will release for consoles and PC on November 14th, 2023.
