New Trailer For Ubisoft’s First Web3 Game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles

The PVP Tactical RPG will launch on the Oasys blockchain

Assassin’s Creed developer Ubisoft shared the news that its first Web3 game is currently in development. Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is a PVP Tactical RPG experimental game that will launch on the Oasys blockchain.

“Assemble a team of mythical Champions, engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players and discover the legends of the dark and mystical world of Grimoria,” States Ubisoft on the game’s official website. “Are you ready to write your name in the chronicles?”

Ubisoft recently released a short announcement trailer for the game which showcases an old tome. The trailer goes on to show close-ups of dark and fantastical drawings within the book. While the trailer gives little away in terms of gameplay, Ubisoft will offer updates via the game’s official Twitter and Discord accounts. The game developer also urges fans to sign up for the Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles newsletter to stay up to date.

For the most part, big-name game developers have kept their focus on developing traditional video games. However, with Ubisoft making the leap to Web3, it’s likely we’ll see other large game studios follow suit. Last year, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda revealed he’d like the Final Fantasy developer to begin utilising blockchain technology. In fact, Square Enix partnered with Sandbox to bring Dungeon Siege to blockchain in 2022.

Ubisoft Quartz

Developing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is undoubtedly an exciting leap into Web3 gaming for Ubisoft. However, whether the game will be successful remains to be seen. One can only hope this foray into Web3 gaming is more successful than the company’s NFT platform Quartz.

In 2021, Nicolas Pouard, Ubisoft VP of Strategic Innovation Lab said, “Ubisoft Quartz is the first building block in our ambitious vision for developing a true metaverse. And it can’t come to life without overcoming blockchain’s early-form limitations for gaming, including scalability and energy consumption.”
