This is yet another showcase of Sony’s transformation from being primarily based on hardware to its now much broader range of entertainment-based power. According to a Reuters interview, it also represents the bridging of the divide between Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony PlayStation, and Sony Music.

Kenichiro Yoshida, chief executive at Sony commented that, “I defined our identity as a creative entertainment company with a solid foundation on technology.”

Gran Turismo is just one of 10 game-inspired film and television adaptations that are currently in various stages of development. Fans have already seen the release of a movie adaption of the popular Uncharted video game franchise.

Other upcoming adaptations

January 15th will see The Last of Us make its debut on HBO. Early reviews for the show marking the show as the best video game adaption ever made. Amazon Prime Video also announced it would be creating a live adaptation of the God of War franchise.

The gaming industry has long been proving itself as one of the leading entertainment sectors that can surpass Hollywood in terms of revenue generated. Revenue aside, the gaming industry has also shown depth in the stories that are being told. Titles such as The Last of Us and the new God of War games are all rooted in deep stories – stories that have great potential in TV and movies.
