According to Hideo Kojima, his next video game will have a lasting impact on both the game and movie industries. He states that his new game is essentially a new medium. Likewise, he feels that his new concept could be revolutionary for various types of entertainment and groundbreaking in a similar way to Death Stranding.
“It’s almost like a new medium. If this succeeds, it will turn things around – not just in the game industry, but in the movie industry as well,” Kojima told the Guardian.
Kojima has yet to reveal specific details about his upcoming project. However, he did hint that it is his most ambitious project yet and requires new, innovative and novel technology to develop. Kojima expressed that success would be easier if he weren’t acting as a trailblazer.
“For the first person, everything is hard,” says Kojima. “But I want to be the first. I want to keep being the first.”
The new title will likely be an Xbox exclusive, considering Kojima’s current partnership with Microsoft to develop a cloud-based game.
“There is a game I have always wanted to make,” Kojima said of the partnership back in June. “It’s a completely new game, one that no one has ever experienced or seen before. I’ve waited very long for the day when I could finally start to create it.”
While little else is known about Kojima’s upcoming project, the developer did announce that the game will feature Elle Fanning.
Kojima’s legendary career in gaming
Hideo Kojima is known for creating the Metal Gear Solid series. In 2015, Kojima re-launched Kojima Productions as an indie studio where he developed Death Stranding. Death Stranding was considered a groundbreaking title that is as much a work of art as it is a game. The game centers around Sam Porter, a courier who delivers supplies to remote colonies.
“When I was a student, I had a part-time job as a postal worker, so I had always felt grateful toward the people who do this kind of work. But the pandemic made this work more crucial. I wouldn’t have survived without Uber Eats,” Kojima says. “In Death Stranding, Sam is a reluctant worker who eventually comes to see the value in his work. “[And] in Japan, ordinary, untrained people signed up to do deliveries like Uber Eats. It became a way for us to help one another.”
