Tencent CEO Goes All In On ‘Immersive Convergence’

The company aims to connect people with Immersive Convergence

Tencent, one of the behemoths of Chinese gaming and a true tech giant has revealed its vision of the techno-future which it predicts will bring “immersive convergence” in future.

Pony Ma, Tencent founder and CEO first used the term “immersive convergence” two years ago but did not elaborate on the term. Until now.

Tencent has now released an explanation in Chinese, but thanks to online translation tools and the brief English elaboration on the company’s website, a little more light has been shed on Ma’s vision.

The concept revolves around creating a digital twin of the physical environment we inhabit for work and play, allowing us to move between ‘meatspace’ and ‘bitspace’ when we need to, in order to take advantage of the best features in each “world”.

Tencent wrote, “Real people can communicate with AI without hindrance, and real objects can be simulated or even changed by the digital world. People can travel in real space and digital space in the form of digital avatars.”

“Extended reality”

The Chinese tech giants believe that the world will soon possess “extended reality” – an AR experience that engages our body, sight and sound – and that the internet of things and real-time communications will allow “multi-sensory interaction and multi-modal fusion sensing technology” meaning “remote interaction can be upgraded into two-way interaction [and] a full sensory experience.”

An example that’s provided to demonstrate the final paragraph stated: “Port operators can use audio and video technologies, coupled with multi-angle cameras, to handle containers remotely in a more efficient way.”

Tencent also offered its “VooV Meeting” Zoom clone as an example of an early experience of “immersive convergence”.

Similar to how Mark Zuckerberg calls the metaverse the future of the internet, Tencent’s CEO explains that the company was founded to connect people and aims to develop and deliver immersive convergence to continue connecting people.
