Metaverse platform The Sandbox will release a series of NFT avatars of rock and roll music legend Elvis Presley to celebrate the late singer’s legacy. Last year, the Elvis Presley Legacy Council announced they would bring the music icon to different online and blockchain platforms with up to 3,000 avatars, each showing outfits and hairstyles from Presley’s career including special emotes based on his dance moves.
The NFT-based avatars are created on Ethereum’s scaling network Polygon. These avatars can be used in Sandbox multiplayer activities and will also open up new content and experiences in the metaverse.

The public sale commenced on August 9th after which all of the singer’s avatars were revealed on August 11th. The avatars were split across four rarity levels with each costing 100 SAND, around $41.
Keeping the legacy alive
Holders of the avatars will have voting rights in the Elvis Legacy Council decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO), an online community where members can vote and make decisions about Presley’s digital growth.
“We believe in a world where Elvis fans participate and shape the direction and future of the Elvis Presley Digital Estate,” said the organisation in a statement via Decrypt.
The Elvis avatars were revealed during a digital celebration of ‘The King of Rock & Roll.’ The event which lasted a week was celebrated to maintain the singer’s legacy and make it accessible to younger generations. Fans could watch concerts and participate in tribute contests and panel discussions through livestreams.
Last year, The Sandbox also announced plans to create an official Elvis Presley metaverse destination. This space will have a digital version of Graceland and unique NFTs and will reside alongside virtual land spaces owned by other celebrities and brands including Snoop Dogg, McDonald’s, Gucci and Adidas.
