Castlevania: Nocturne is a new anime series based on Konami’s long-running side-scrolling platform action games. Ahead of its release on Netflix this September 28th, Netflix Anime has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming anime.
Notably, the new Netflix anime series tells the origin story of vampire hunter Richter Belmont, which has never before been shown. Taking place during the French Revolution, this original story is being created by Project 51 Productions, who have previously released animated series based on the games. Castlevania Nocturne was written by Clive Bradley, with Kevin Kolde as the showrunner.
“The gory and gothic adventures of the Castlevania franchise continue with an exciting new setting and their highest stakes yet,” states Netflix Anime in the trailer’s description. “A gripping story of love and loss, Nocturne marks an evolution to the original fan-favourite Castlevania Netflix Series.”
Castlevania Nocturne Tells Richter’s Origin Story
The two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer shows stunning visuals, including a few epic combat sequences. Hauntingly beautiful music accompanies the intense and visceral visuals. In the trailer, a vampire kills a young Richter Belmont’s mother before his eyes. The vampire then threatens to kill Richter in the future. Following this, the trailer shows a grown Richter as well as haunting snippets of dangerous characters.
“If you’ve never seen a Castlevania show, gaming adaptation, or anime before, start here,” Netflix Anime adds.
Most Video Game Adaptations Are Animated
As it turns out, most film and television adaptations of video games are animated. According to a report by technology research and advisory group, Omdia, since 1982, over 70 per cent of video game adaptations have been animated. Of course, 65 per cent of said animated adaptations were Japanese anime series. In fact, there is already a popular Castlevania anime series on Netflix.
Still, there have been a number of successful live-action adaptations, especially of late. HBO’s live-action The Last of Us series was a hit amongst fans of the games and those new to the franchise. The success bodes well for upcoming live adaptations like Netflix’s Bioshock film and Amazon Prime’s forthcoming Fallout series.
