After acquiring the company in June 2021, Meta has announced that it is shutting down Crayta, a free-to-play game creation and sharing tool developed by Unit 2 Games.
Crayta launched on Google Stadia (the once promising cloud gaming platform that is now a discontinued service) on July 1, 2020. The platform launched on the Epic Games Store and was acquired by Meta later that year. It survived less than two years under the Facebook and Instagram parent company.
Unit 2 Games’ team wrote in a Medium post, “While we’ve expanded Crayta significantly since launch, we’ve unfortunately not seen quite enough growth for us to justify continuing. Google Stadia shut its doors recently, which was the initial launch platform for Crayta, so we’ve decided that now is the right time to bring things to a close, despite the dedicated efforts of our team and our community.”
The company also took to Twitter to break the sad news to the Crayta community and urged players who have dedicated a lot of time and effort to the platform to make screen recordings of their favourite games and worlds. This way they can save their memories and share them with others.
After 2.5 years of fun and creativity, we’re sad to announce the closure of Crayta on all platforms, from 4pm GMT (8am PT) on Friday March 3rd 2023. Read our announcement & FAQs below.

Thank you, Craytans – we love you. ❤️
Farewell events are scheduled to take place
However, the company also wrote that Crayta will schedule activities and events before it shuts down completely, “Rest assured, we’re going to make the very most of the remaining time we have together. We’ll post a schedule soon of the activities and events we’re planning — everything from celebratory playalong streams through to help and support to make the most of your hard-earned creation skills in the future,” the company wrote in a blog post.
Although Crayta is shutting down, the Unit 2 Games studio will still exist with the possibility of soon announcing their next big project, which may be in line with helping Meta bring its metaverse ambitions to life.
Crayta has been around for nearly 3 years and will shut down on all platforms from 4 pm GMT (8 am PT) on Friday, March 3rd 2023.
