The UK monthly charts show that Modern Warfare 2, God of War Ragnarök, and Nintendo Switch have dominated the top spots.
Using GSD data, Gamesindustry.biz has noted some gaming figures for November. Across November 4.3 million games were sold in the UK. While this is a massive number it is technically a drop of 7.3% over the year before. This could simply be a result of the current cost of living crisis that the UK finds itself in and when the price of everything else is going up, it’s understandable that game sales may be slightly down.
Another key reason for this could be down to Call of Duty itself as this year the latest instalment dropped in October whereas last year’s Call of Duty release came out in November. Despite this, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is holding up extremely well and currently sits at the top of the list as the biggest game of November.
Coming in second on the list is PlayStation exclusive, God of War Ragnarök. The highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s God of War has seen an impressive launch. The title is now the fastest selling first-party PlayStation game with 5.1 million copies of the game being sold in just its first week of release.
Third, on the UK charts is FIFA 23 however, it’s followed by both Pokémon Violet and Scarlet so if those figures are combined, the latest generation of Pokémon game would take that third spot. GSD data cannot take into account digital data from the Nintendo-published game so there is always the possibility that numbers are even higher than they appear. Violet and Scarlet currently stand as the second biggest Pokémon launch in UK in history, beaten only by the release of Sun and Moon on the 3DS in 2016.
Console sales
Nintendo finds itself in a good spot for console sales too with various black Friday sales targeting the Switch and the release of a special edition OLED switch to mark the release of the latest Pokémon game. This has resulted in the Nintendo Switch being the best-selling console with a 175% jump in sales month-on-month.
The Xbox Series S and X followed closely in second with a sales jump of 105%. The Xbox Series S also saw a significant price slash over black Friday sales, making for a cheap buy right before Christmas.
While PS5 may seem behind in third place, it’s still good news for the console as new stock and a God of War specific bundle saw PS5 sales being up 75% month-on-month.
Will Call of Duty remain top of the list next month or perhaps another will steal its spot? December has already seen the release of The Callisto Protocol and Marvel’s Midnight Suns and the anticipated release of Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core is also set for a December 13th release.
