Just a few years ago, gaming in cars seemed like an unattainable dream. Now, however, it’s looking like an inevitable future. Already some Teslas have Steam integration. Likewise, NVIDIA’s game streaming services are available in select Polestar and Hyundai models. Now BMW is partnering with gaming platform, AirConsole.
The BMW Group is collaborating with AirConsole to bring a unique form of in-car gaming to the BMW 5 Series. With the AirConsole app, passengers and drivers will be able to play casual games while the vehicle is stationary. BMW plans to integrate the app into other car models in the future.
BMW drivers and passengers will use their smartphones as controllers. Users must scan a QR code presented on the car’s curved display to connect their phones to the console. The app supports multiple players meaning even rear passengers can partake in in-car gaming sessions.
Unlike Tesla’s Steam integration, the BMW AirConsole focuses on offering casual games. Genres offered on the system include simulation, racing, sports, trivia, strategy and puzzle games. Fifteen titles, including Music Guess and Overcooked, will be available at launch.
BMW Celebrate AirConsole Launch Gaming Wrap
In celebration of the BMW AirConsole launch, the car company is offering a unique gaming wrap. The design is meant to symbolize the gaming experience and features large pixels. Multiple games in the AirConsole gaming library inspired the colour scheme. Additionally, parts of gaming controllers wrap around the i5.
While integrating gaming into vehicles seems to be a new trend, it poses safety concerns. Currently, gaming in vehicles is only possible when a vehicle is stationary. However, as self-driving car technology evolves, the possibility of gaming while a vehicle is in motion comes closer to reality. This is, of course, a safety concern as it could potentially lead to car accidents.
