Online game developer and publisher Wargaming has revealed that its popular naval warfare-themed online multiplayer game World of Warships has partnered with Popeye the Sailor Man in support of World Ocean Month.
The collaboration is a tribute to the iconic cartoon character’s nautical roots and his message of conservation and protection of marine life. World of Warships players can get Popeye-inspired in-game items like the ‘Popeye’ commander, flag, voiceover and even a special camouflage for selected ships.
Marko Valentic, global business development and communications director at Wargaming said, “Popeye the Sailor Man is a beloved childhood favourite for many of us here at Wargaming, so having the opportunity to bring him to our waters is an honour.” He went on to explain that, “It feels even more special knowing we are making a contribution to raising awareness about ocean preservation while bringing joy to our players.”
Charity partnerships
This collaboration will take place in tandem with a charity partnership, to be announced ahead of the content becoming available. Taking place every June, World Ocean Month is an annual celebration of our ocean and a platform to raise awareness of the work needed to maintain one of the Earth’s greatest ecosystems.
Jarred Goro, vice president of licensing North America at King Features said, “As one of the world’s most recognisable pop-culture sailors, we could not think of a better gaming partner for Popeye than World of Warships.” He continued, “We are thrilled that World of Warships’ passion for ocean conversation matches our own and we look forward to bringing this in-game collaboration to fans around the world.”
The World Ocean Month celebration will run throughout the month of June, and players can participate in special events, in-game missions and challenges that are themed around Popeye and his nautical adventures.
