OpenAI Is Creating Artificial General Intelligence For Humanity

The company says that, ‘A world with superintelligence is perhaps the most important – and hopeful, and scary – project in human history’

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI may just be responsible for the most advanced AI model we’ve ever seen – and the AI revolution doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.

OpenAI has shared its plans for humanity with the invention of AI and its mission is to, “Ensure that artificial general intelligence—AI systems that are generally smarter than humans—benefits all of humanity,” the company wrote in a blog post.

GPT-4 is currently OpenAI’s flagship model which is capable of doing a lot of impressive things from generating, editing and even iterating with users on creative and technical writing tasks to even learning a user’s writing style.

The company’s latest model also comes with visual input that allows it to accept images as inputs and generate captions, analyses as well as classifications.

OpenAI says that if it successfully creates AGI, the technology could elevate humanity by, “Increasing abundance, turbocharging the global economy, and aiding in the discovery of new scientific knowledge that changes the limits of possibility.”

The company went on to add that AGI could potentially give everyone new capabilities such as having access to nearly all cognitive tasks and providing a great force multiplier for human creativity and ingenuity.

Potential risks

Whilst outlining all the wonderful possibilities that humanity could enjoy with AGI, OpenAI also acknowledged that it, “Would also come with serious risk of misuse, drastic accidents, and societal disruption.”

The company affirms that the upside of AGI is great and that it does not believe it’s possible or desirable for society to stop or hinder its development forever; rather, “Society and the developers of AGI have to figure out how to get it right.”

“Although we cannot predict exactly what will happen, and of course our current progress could hit a wall, we can articulate the principles we care about most.”

One of OpenAI’s core principles is wanting AGI to empower humanity in order to, “Maximally flourish in the universe.” Adding that it does not expect the future to be an unqualified utopia, but wants to maximise the good and minimise the bad with AGI as an amplifier for humanity.

“We want to successfully navigate massive risks. In confronting these risks, we acknowledge that what seems right in theory often plays out more strangely than expected in practice.”

Preparing the world

To make sure the world is ready to adopt artificial intelligence as a way of life, the company believes we have to continuously learn and adapt from less powerful versions of the technology.

“First, as we create successively more powerful systems, we want to deploy them and gain experience with operating them in the real world.” Adding that, “This is the best way to carefully steward AGI into existence – a gradual transition to a world with AGI is better than a sudden one.”

The company says that a, “Gradual transition will give people, policymakers and institutions time to understand what’s happening, personally experience the benefits and downsides of these systems, adapt our economy, and to put regulation in place.”

OpenAI believes that society and AI can co-evolve and people can figure out what they want while the stakes are still somewhat low. “We expect powerful AI to make the rate of progress in the world much faster, and we think it’s better to adjust to this incrementally.”

The company also adds that it has attempted to set up its structure in a way that aligns its incentives with a good outcome.

“Successfully transitioning to a world with superintelligence is perhaps the most important – and hopeful, and scary – project in human history. Success is far from guaranteed, and the stakes (boundless downside and boundless upside) will hopefully unite all of us.”
