Starbreeze Plans Live Action Payday Project

Swedish firm teams up with LA production company, Stockholm Syndrome

Swedish games firm Starbreeze Studios has plans to turn its Payday IP into a film or TV show.

The company has partnered with Los Angeles-based production firm Stockholm Syndrome to bring the crime-focused shooter franchise into other mediums. At the time of writing, the Payday series has been played by around 40 million people.

“We are very pleased to partner with Stockholm Syndrome with the mutual ambition to bring our franchise to new heights and an even broader audience,” Starbreeze boss Tobias Sjögren said.

“It is a milestone on our journey to create IP that expands beyond the realm of games, and Stockholm Syndrome is a great partner and meshes perfectly with our mission to build an even broader and more engaged community.”

Stockholm Syndrome founder Peter Settman added, “We’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of different IPs over the years, and Payday has always been on our radar. It has a cinematic quality and narrative that lends itself to a fantastic live-action adaptation.”

This news comes hot on the heels of Naughty Dog‘s The Last of Us coming to TV screens via HBO to critical acclaim.

Payday 3 is set to release at some point in 2023.
