Amazon is set to build an entire Tomb Raider franchise

It’s been somewhat of a drought for Tomb Raider fans in recent years, however that is all about to change

Actress and screenwriter, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has extended her deal with Amazon and its Prime video service. This has now seen her become attached to a new Tomb Raider series.

Sources from The Hollywood Reporter state that while there are no plans for her to star in the TV adaptation she will be writing the scripts. In addition to writing, Waller-Bridge will also be the executive producer, working alongside Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt.

It would seem that Amazon’s comedy-drama Fleabag has presented many new opportunities for Waller-Bridge. With Amazon being keen to have her working on new upcoming projects. In addition to the Tomb Raider rumours, Waller-Bridge is working on another project called Sign Here. This is an adaptation of author Claudia Lux’s book. Not only will the screenwriter be busy behind the scenes, but also in front. With an upcoming appearance in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

A great time for Tomb Raider fans

The Tomb Raider franchise is no stranger to adaptations. The iconic video game character was first bought to life on the big screen in 2001, played by Angelina Jolie. A second instalment was then released in 2003. For years fans waited for Lara to return to our screens, in 2018 a reboot starring Alicia Vikander was released. Then a sequel was supposed to be in development with Vikander set to return. However, it was cancelled in 2022 after the rights to the material had expired.

While there are currently no further details on the Amazon Prime series it’s an exciting time for Tomb Raider fans. Many will be speculating and fan-casting their Lara Croft but in the meantime, there is still more Tomb Raider goodness to get excited for.

It’s not just a TV series that’s on the cards. It would also seem that Amazon is set to create a full-feature film. It appears that the massive popularity of franchises such as the MCU has spurred the desire to create an interconnected universe. This means that the feature film will have connections to the TV series and any further content.

There’s more

Not only has the wait for the big screen been a while, but it’s been a significant stint in the gaming world too. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which was developed by Edios-Montrèal and published by Square Enix came out in 2018. Since then, fans have been wondering what comes next for the iconic character. Back in December Amazon announced with Crystal Dynamics that they would be developing a new multiplatform Tomb Raider title.

This means fans are getting a TV series, a movie, and a video game. That’s just for now! If all goes well, it would be highly likely that Amazon would expand on the universe further with more video games, series, and feature films. Lara Croft fans have just gone from having no news to an entire blizzard of content.

We are seeing so many popular video games become part of the TV and film industry. With the likes of an upcoming Mario movie and even titles such as Death Stranding and God of War getting adaptations. Currently, The Last of Us is airing on HBO, and if the Tomb Raider series can capture some of the same magic, fans should be more than pleased.
