The English Premier League club first announced its plans to launch its first digital collection as well as a new metaverse platform on the Tezos blockchain in late November.
United also launched its official Discord channel where fans can engage with some of the club’s officials, including players, and share ideas with fans across the globe.
The club stated that the free digital collection is a gift to their loyal fans all over the world. Adding that NFTs will play an integral role in future virtual and in-person events as well as special perks.
United’s three types of NFTs include Classic Key, Rare Key and Ultra Rare Key. The Classic Key will allow holders to participate in giveaways, drops, and even access the club’s Discord server. The Rare Key, on the other hand, allows holders to get special discounts and also lets them connect with some of the club’s legends.
Then there’s the Ultra Rare Key that comes with not only all of the perks of the Classic and Rare Key, but fortunate holders will also get an invite to the club’s legendary Old Trafford stadium.
United was able to give out this size of digital collection due to the low cost of minting NFTs and the speed of transactions on the Tezos blockchain. The club went on to add that it’ll be launching paid NFT collections in the future that’ll allow fans to get even bigger and better rewards than the first free drops.
The move from Manchester United to gift its fans with free NFTs might just pave the way for other football clubs to follow the same pattern in building their club’s NFTs collection and giving their fans new ways to connect with the club.
