The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s release is only four months away (sooner for citizens of the UK, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria or Sweden) and a new two-minute trailer was recently released. The trailer features Mario entering an arena to battle Donkey Kong, and Luigi losing half of his moustache to Bowser, among other scenes. Now, animator and YouTuber King Bob Gaming has remade the new trailer using Nintendo 64 graphics and the result is joyously nostalgic.
King Bob Gaming’s remake is almost an exact replica of the original trailer. The YouTuber solely used graphic assets from Super Mario 64 to create his trailer. Viewers can check out the official trailer here for comparison.
“Here is the long-awaited Mario Movie Trailer, but remade using N64 graphics,” King Bob Gaming writes in the video’s description. “Earlier this month, I made a partial version of the trailer but wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in a full version. I challenged you all to get the first part to 10K likes, and you’ve more than delivered! Thank you!”
“Now, should I say if this video gets 100k likes, I’ll do the full movie?” The YouTuber adds in a pinned comment. Thus far, the fan-made trailer has received 17,000 likes on YouTube.
While some fans may be rejoicing over the upcoming film, not everyone is happy about it. John Leguizamo, who played Luigi in 1993’s live-action film Super Mario Bros., stated his displeasure with the new film’s casting of predominately white voice actors.
Upcoming Movie Adaptations
Despite being one of the earlier game franchises, Mario is still going strong on Nintendo, so it is no surprise that a new movie is on the way. Other popular video games are receiving film adaptations as well. Netflix is developing a Bioshock film with Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence set to direct. Likewise, Amazon is developing a God of War live-action series.
