Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was easily one of the most anticipated titles of the year, and after launching on just before the weekend, MW2 just enjoyed the franchise’s biggest opening ever after generating $800 million globally in its first three days.
Compared to Activision’s previous numbers, MW2 is not only the highest-grossing Call of Duty game ever but also the highest-grossing property in entertainment this year, pulling in more cash than some of the year’s biggest movies like Doctor Strange 2 and Top: Gun Maverick in the same time period.
To celebrate the milestone, Johanna Faries, general manager of Call of Duty commented, “Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare 2’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest-grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honour and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world. As amazing as this opening has been, Call of Duty has much more in store. An unprecedented level of support for the Modern Warfare universe is on the horizon and Warzone 2.0’s launch is right around the corner. It’s an incredible time for the franchise.”
Modern Warfare 3 (2011) held the previous opening record with $775 million in global revenue for more than five days, while MW2 broke the record in three days.
PlayStation also announced that MW2 is the biggest launch of any Call of Duty game on its store.
