Games Workshop Partnering with Amazon to Create Warhammer 40k Films

Games Workshop is partnering with Amazon subsidiary Amazon Content Services LLC to develop movies and television series based on its intellectual property. The British creator of miniature wargames is best known for its Warhammer titles, Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

According to Game Workshop’s announcement, the deal is not yet finalized and is “dependent on and subject to contracts being agreed and entered into, which the parties are working towards.” However, the two companies have reached an agreement in principle that seems likely to move forward.

Said agreement will also grant associated merchandising rights to Amazon. Amazon plans to begin by developing the Warhammer 40,00 cinematic universe. Currently, Amazon is in preliminary discussions with writers, among other development activities. No further details about the partnership are available as of yet, however Games Workshop promises another announcement will follow when more details are known.

Warhammer 40,000 is the most popular miniature wargame worldwide and a plethora of video games based on the tabletop game have been made over the last few decades. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and Total War: Warhammer III are just two Warhammer video games to release in the past year. With the many video games as well as the miniature wargame, Amazon will have plenty of material to draw from.

From Console to the Silver Screen

Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 is the latest game franchise to be offered film adaptations. Kojima Productions recently announced it is partnering with Hammerstone Studios to develop a Death Stranding film. Netflix is developing a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn series as well as a Bioshock movie. Likewise, American McGee’s Alice is receiving a television adaptation. Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, are developing a Duke Nukem film. In addition, Amazon recently announced it is officially creating a God of War live-action series. And many other adaptations are on the way.
