“AI content doesn’t belong in video games”

That’s the overwhelming consensus of nearly 5,000 Redditors in a recent poll discussing the use of artificial intelligence in Fortnite

Fortnite players have expressed their displeasure with AI generated content in Chapter 7 of the long-running online game. 4,788 Redditors voted in a poll asking for their thoughts on AI content, with an overwhelming majority of 83.6% saying that AI, ‘Doesn’t belong in Fortnite or other video games’. Less than 12% felt that, ‘AI content has its uses, but shouldn’t replace everything’, while just 4% said that they had, ‘No issues with AI content in Fortnite or other video games.’

The poll is part of a Megathread, now with nearly 600 comments that show a clear consensus that AI content is hugely unpopular among the community. Here are some of the comments.

runnysyrup: “it’s deeply upsetting to know the artists would be tossed to the curb if gen ai was even remotely competent enough to make playable 3D models.”

a_dog_with_internet: “Just cancelled it yesterday when I found out about the AI being used. I was happy paying for human made content that supports artist’s livelihoods, I’m not gonna pay for AI slop that takes jobs away from those artists and creates an inferior product.”

wawacryin21: “Fuck AI get this shit out of the game. It’s an insult to the artists at Epic Games for even including this with their work. Hire more artists to make these designs. Buy royalty free music for emotes or hire people to make music for emotes. AI is the worst.”

ACatWithAThumb: “If I had known there was an AI emote in the pass I would have not gotten the crew. This was the last time I paid for anything in the game until they reverse course.”

LittlestWarrior: “I do not want any use of AI in Fortnite. I will stop spending my money on this game if the designers, devs, and players are not respected. Fuck AI.”

mcginniswayne: “This has killed all of my excitement for the new Chapter. I seriously regret getting the Pass knowing it has AI-generated content in it. This is just so lazy and cheap.”

SolsLuminousDev: “My main issue is AI being used to kill creative roles, AI has its uses I think it has potential, but what Epic and Tim [Sweeney, CEO] don’t understand is that it’s not supposed to replace hard working human artists. I’m not spending any money on fortnite and neither should you if this is how Epic is treating its developers, it’s players, and the integrity of the game as a whole.”

P3pp3rp0tts86: “Its very simple .. The ONLY message you are conveying to your audience when using generative AI at ANY POINT of video game development is: “We are lazy and cheap and didn’t want to pay a real person to do this task.” There’s NO other way of slicing it..”

Anyone in favour of AI?

This is just a small sample of the comments that are representative of the larger conversation. A lot of posters said they would unsubscribe or stop playing the game as a result. Were there any posts in favour of generative AI? Well, we found three (out of 585).

Mr24601: “I will be the one comment to say I think its a good thing Epic is using AI tools to make doodad art. It allows their artists do a lot more.”

Epic_Kinger: “I don’t understand why people hate AI so much… I’ve noticed in this Chapter that some billboards look like they could have been created with AI and that’s totally fine by me. It doesn’t affect my experience at all and keeps the island full of details. AI can create things like billboard art in minutes, saving artists time to focus on other parts of the game or map. Of course, not everything has to be AI, but it’s not bad it’s helpful and allows the team to work more efficiently.”

InternationalFlow825: “The average player doesn’t give a shit whether ai is used and neither do I.”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is a well-documented advocate of generative AI, sharing on X recently that, “AI will be involved in nearly all future production.” Indeed, he anticipates a future where AAA titles could be made by a handful of people using AI saying, “What would it take for a 10-person team to build a game like Zelda Breath of the Wild in which the AI is just doing all the dialogue and you’re just writing some character synopsis? That’s totally going to be within reach over the next few years.”
