Warner Bros To Turn Harry Potter, Game Of Thrones And Batman Games Into Live-Service Titles

CEO David Zaslav said, ‘We want to drive engagement and monetisation of longer cycles and at higher levels’

Entertainment giant Warner Bros is going to be making live-service projects out of all of its games franchises. That’s according to the company’s controversial CEO David Zaslav (pictured), who told shareholders during a recent call – as spotted by VGC – that IP like “Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC – which is mainly Batman today – and Mortal Kombat,” would be receiving this treatment.

“Our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC based with three-four year release schedules to include more always-on gameplay through live services, multiplatform and free-to-play extensions with the goal to have more players spending more time on more platforms,” Zaslav said.

“Ultimately, we want to drive engagement and monetisation of longer cycles and at higher levels. We have specific capabilities. We are currently under scale and see significant opportunity to generate greater post-purchase revenue.”

In 2023 to date, Warner Bros has had a pretty successful time. Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy launched in February to critical acclaim –shifting over 12 million copies – while the recently launched fighting title Mortal Kombat 1 has sold more than one million units.
