Apple has announced that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will allow users to capture spatial video for use with its upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset.

“This is really important, as your iPhone is with you all the time, so you won’t ever miss capturing a special moment using spatial video, like your family’s beach vacation,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.

The iPhone 15 Pro utilizes its main and ultrawide cameras to take video that users can experience as 3D via Apple’s upcoming AR headset. This will allow users to re-experience memories as if they are actually there. The Vision Pro headset is slated for release in early 2024. Apple hasn’t announced whether users will be able to view their VR videos on other XR headsets.

iPhone 15 Camera Upgrades

The iPhone 15 camera also includes new pro workflows that allow filmmakers to create even better videos. Transfer speeds are now 20x faster and ProRes video can now record directly to external storage, which allows for recording options up to 4K at 60 fps. iPhone 15 Pro includes a new option for Log encoding. Additionally, it’s the first smartphone to support the global standard for colour workflows, the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES).

“This is the most pro lineup we have ever created, with a state-of-the-art titanium design, the best iPhone camera system yet that enables game-changing new workflows, and the A17 Pro chip, which ushers in a new chapter of performance and games never before seen on iPhone, “says Joswiak.

The Vision Pro headset is primarily an augmented reality device; however, the headset is also VR-capable. Apple began taking applications for its XR Developer Hardware Kits over the summers. The Vision Pro is set to retail at the hefty price of $3,499. However, for those who can purchase the Vision Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro, a new form of experiencing home videos awaits.
