Gran Turismo Comes To Life On The Big Screen In First Trailer

Gamer to racer motorsport movie looks epic – let’s hope it’s not just one big advert…

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for its highly anticipated Gran Turismo film that aims to bring the popular video game series to life exclusively in movie theatres.

Inspired by the popular racing video game, the narrative is based on the story of an amateur gamer turned real-life race car driver. The film follows the story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe), a British racing enthusiast determined to turn pro by triumphing in the GT Academy competition hosted by Sony and Nissan.

This high-stakes tournament brings together elite Gran Turismo players from around the globe, as they push their skills to the limit in a fierce race to the finish line.

A star-packed cast

We also see David Harbour (Stranger Things) in the trailer who will portray Mardenborough’s trainer, Jack Salter, as well as Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings), who will portray a sports marketing executive. The film’s cast as seen in the trailer indicates Gran Turismo could be a high-octane adventure and a successful video game adaptation.

Although the film’s specific plot details remain under wraps, the tagline describes it as, “The ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.”

With the release of The Last of Us which brought a record number of viewers to HBO (8.2 million), Sony has become no stranger to video game adaptations and has tapped Neill Blomkamp to direct Gran Turismo.

Gran Turismo is currently scheduled to release on August 11th, 2023.
