Artificial intelligence may be this year’s buzzword and now Spotify is getting involved with its new AI DJ.
Spotify claims that “personalisation is at the heart of what we do” and to take that personalisation one step further, they are using the power of AI to connect listeners to a DJ that can understand a user’s taste in music and choose what music to play for them.
The new AI guide will launch in beta and deliver a curated line-up of music in addition to commentary around the tracks and artists to give a personalised feel to the experience. This new AI feature will play the latest songs enjoy and dive back into a users history to pull out some old favourites
Personal DJ
The goal is to create a Spotify experience that offers listeners insightful facts about music, artists and genres by using generative AI tools from OpenAI. In addition, Spotify’s personalisation technology will continue providing a line-up of music recommendations based on what the user enjoys.
These AI tools will also be used alongside Spotify’s own music editors who have expert experience in genres and understand music culture. This means that experts are using AI tools to scale their knowledge rather than simply having the AI system take over completely. In doing so, the hope is to avoid mishaps as we have seen with other AI systems such as Google’s chatbot bard giving inaccurate information.
To bring the AI DJ voice to life, Spotify uses its acquisition from Sonantic to bring “stunningly realistic voices from text” to the experience. The voice model was created by partnering with the company’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier Jernigan, who previously served as one of the hosts on Spotify’s first morning show, The Get Up. Since his voice was a hit on the show, it will act as the first model for the new DJ.
Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada can find the AI DJ on the apps Music Feed homepage.
