Apple’s XR Headset Details Leak

New information about the mixed reality headset, including 120-degree field of view, a pair of processors and waist-mounted battery

News of Apple’s AR/VR headset has been circulating for some time and there has been speculation about its launch for years. Most recently, we reported the rumours that the device would launch by the end of 2022. Unfortunately, here we are in 2023 and Apple has still yet to release its headset, now rumoured for a Q1 launch.

However, thanks to a recent leak, possible new details about Apple’s upcoming XR headset are available. According to The Information and ‘based on interviews with multiple people who have worked on it’, the Apple XR headset is made of aluminium, carbon fiber and glass. Both lightweight and compact, the device offers a 120-degree field of view, which is more expansive than both the Meta Quest Pro’s and Magic Leap 2’s.

Additionally, the Apple XR Headset Includes two processors – a central processor and an IPS processor for processing video. There is no headphone jack. However, the device has an H2 chip that transfers audio to AirPod Pros at ultra-low latency, while ‘Conventional Bluetooth headphones are not supposed to work optimally’. [Ed: Typical Apple closed ecosystem nonsense!]

In addition, users with visual impairments can insert corrective lenses into the headset, and a motor within the headset then automatically adjusts the lens’s distance from the wearer.

The headband includes the device’s speakers, while power comes from a separate battery pack mounted on the user’s waist. [Ed: If you’re going to force users to wear a tether, why not use an iPhone for external processing, too? This is a huge user experience mistake if true!]

Apple XR Headset Steers Away From Gaming

Apple does not intend for its headset to focus on gaming and thus, the device does not come with a controller. Currently, the company is still experimenting to determine the best form for the input device, though the company is leaning towards hand tracking.

The leak confirms that Apple’s XR headset will include an outward-facing display that allows those around the wearer to see their facial expressions. Additionally, the device utilizes a Sony 4K micro-OLED display for the centre image for each eye and an LG display for the peripherals. The headset has two LiDAR scanners and tens of inward and outward-facing cameras.

Apple’s XR headset will offer mixed-reality video conference calls that utilise realistic-looking avatars. These avatars mimic the user’s facial expressions, including eyebrow and jaw movements. The Apple XR headset is expected to retail for around $3,000 upon release.
