The DC Comics Universe Sets Its Sights On Video Games

Gunn also plans to create TV series based on DC characters

Filmaker James Gunn has confirmed via Twitter that future DC Games will connect to larger DCU connected universe in moves clearly aimed to ape the success earned by rivals Marvel.

Gunn was recently appointed co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Producer Peter Safran. He states that the DC universe will span multiple films and television series. When asked to clarify whether this included games, Gunn replied, “Yes.”

The comment is in line with the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav’s plan to “build a bible for a cohesive DC universe,” which he stated will include movies, TV shows, games and more. Whether DC will consider the events that transpire within these DCU games to be canon is not yet clear.

While future DC game titles will be part of the DCU, the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn’t. Said title is actually part of the Batman: Arkham universe.

James Gunn: Working for DC and Marvel

Despite Gunn’s recent appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios, he is best known for his work on films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, Gunn’s most recent project was The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is now streaming on Disney+.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, which Gunn also directed, will hit theaters in May. Now that he is working with both top superhero universes, Gunn addressed the supposed feud between the comic giants, stating they aren’t in direct competition as some fans think.

“Not only do I love [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige], he was the first person I told after I did the deal with DC (John Cena was the second). Contrary to popular belief, a dollar less for Marvel is not a dollar more for DC. DC and Marvel have the common goal of keeping the theater-going experience vibrant and alive,” Gunn told fans after accepting the position of co-CEO at DC.

Gunn also assures there will still be standalone DC projects like Harley Quinn, the animated series and 2019’s Joker. Additionally, the Guardians of the Galaxy director plans to create more TV series for DC characters, expanding the DCU.

Marvel’s got game

DC isn’t alone in focusing on superhero game titles. Various Marvel games, such as a new Iron Man game, are also in the works. Disney and Marvel held their first-ever game showcase in September. Titles such as AR game, Marvel World of Heroes, and Tron: Identity were announced.
